Class Overview

Class Description

Powder Coating Fundamentals and Certification Preparation is designed to introduce students to the core concepts, equipment, materials, and applied techniques used in professional powder coating environments. This course provides a practical foundation for learners who want to understand the powder coating process from surface preparation through final cure, while also supporting preparation for internal, employer-based, or industry-style certification assessments.

Students will explore the complete powder coating workflow, including part evaluation, cleaning and pretreatment, masking, grounding, powder selection, spray gun setup, application technique, curing requirements, quality control, and safe shop practices. Emphasis is placed on understanding not only how to apply powder, but why each step matters in producing consistent, durable, and professional-quality finishes.

Course topics may include powder coating chemistry basics, substrate considerations, film thickness, electrostatic application principles, oven operation, cure schedules, coating defects, troubleshooting, color and finish selection, maintenance procedures, and best practices for handling tools, powders, and coated parts. Students will also review safety procedures related to ventilation, personal protective equipment, electrical grounding, heat exposure, compressed air, and general shop awareness.

Hands-on or demonstration-based activities may include preparing sample parts, setting up application equipment, practicing spray patterns, identifying coating issues, reading product specifications, reviewing cure requirements, and evaluating finished parts for appearance, coverage, adhesion, and consistency. Students will also participate in review exercises, knowledge checks, and certification-style preparation activities to reinforce key concepts.

By the end of the course, students should have a stronger understanding of the powder coating process, common production expectations, and the practical knowledge needed to perform basic powder coating tasks safely and effectively. This course is ideal for beginners, shop employees, production team members, hobbyists, or small business owners who want a structured introduction to powder coating and preparation for a fundamentals-based certification review.
